It would take 4 and a half hours for something going at the speed of light to get from Earth's orbit to Pluto's orbit.

Hmmm, in that case we have 3 options:
* Colonists somehow find FTL in new solar system.
* We have a fast-forward button (similar to kerbal space program)
* I scrap this story and create another one.

Its gonna be very difficult to explain how humans have FTL yet still use an inferior computer.

Well, here is a rough idea for a story.

Lets assume ftl has already been invented, your a convict
running from the law. You need to get a ship but all you could find was
an abandoned ancient orion colony ship that you try to pach up with basic ftl
(nucular engine doesn't provide enough energy to run it continuously)?

How does this idea sound?

I like the original better. I'm not one hundred percent sure but I don't think FTL is going to exist in Trillek. At least not with the one star system plan.
Also FTL is just another unknown that we have to explain with made up science and engineering (of course, the same could be said for gravity generators).

personally, I agree. In all honesty, I want to keep the story as realistic as possible.

also, I thought FTL was a given in this game. going the speed of light, it would take about 70 years to reach Pluto from here. how do we get around that?

Voyager I, II, Pioneer and Pluto Express only needs some years to travel these distances, and they only used thrust in launch + gravitational assistance. With a continuous propulsion with a plasma engine, Mars is at 2 moths of travel from Earth (~1 UA in 2 moths).
Without FTL ships travelling to other star systems, must be generational ships or have sleep chambers...

Some time ago, I proposed to have a "slow" or very limited FTL or a way to reach speeds near of light speed (Like the fast-lanes in Free Lancer). Enough fast to reduce a travel of Earth-Mars to a one or two hours that is affordable for a game.

I might have an idea to speed up orion to near light speed quickly without killing the crew.

Its gonna be fictional of course, but plausable enough to possibly work.
Ill post it in the ideas section when i get off work.

If we have gravity generators extreme acceleration isn't a problem. This method is called inertial dampening in most sci-fis.

yah, gravity generators would be helpful in this situation.
But their is a way to compensate, using a bunch of springs its possible to build a device there the pilot can sit in and survive
extreme acceleration for a little while.

After doing the math, there is no way my idea could work in reality.

However, this is a computer game, so we do have the ability to smudge reality a bit
and say that this spring dampening system works.
