If they all start with the default program+database they have the same coordinate system.

CR put it quite well in another thread: I think players' starmaps should start off with several basic locations built in, and that players should be able to go to them.

Like, Maybe Earth could be the point of orientation.

Very difficult to have Earth in a randomly generated galaxy, mainly because people gonna wanna visit it.

Alderin: That would also be an excellent disincentive to over-using the broadcast mechanic, but I've moved your comment to an on-going thread in Design, as it's probably more appropriate there.

I'm all for having the player write code to chart planets, and for not knowing exactly where you are. I do think it would be nice to have a few non-randomized locations built in, like you guys said above - to give the player somewhere to go and branch off of.

perhaps before a player names an object it could be known by it's coordinates? that would make sense, and it would be easy to find.

also, I think we wouldnt have to make points of orientation; the player would choose those him/herself.
