An idea for not actually having FTL (GASP!)

Postby missPapaya » Mon Oct 21, 2013 7:45 pm

I would like to propose the idea of a "gate" system ala Cowboy Bebop and Freelance. Basically, the gates would be in fixed locations in space and due to some reason the story people can come up with, the straight path between the gates is several times shorter than the actual distance between the gates. This way, the ships wouldn't have an FTL drive, but would still be able to travel distances in what feels faster than the speed of light. IIRC in Cowboy Bebop, distance is scaled down 24:1 when going through gates. So if you have a ship that can go 1/2 the speed of light, you could travel let's say from Earth to Mars 12x faster than it would take light to get there, while still going slower than light.

If there's PvP (Which I'm assuming there is) it could become a danger zone, too. Players camping the "Gates" would make it much more interesting. It'd be riskier to take the "Gates" but it'd be much faster. This is an awesome idea :D

twelve times the speed of light would still take weeks, if not months or years, even within one solar system.

Not so. Light from our sun would take only 17 hours to travel to one of the Voyager Spacecraft (the first manmade objects to leave the solar system). Travel at 12c would make this a plausible time frame for a player to travel around a system, and I feel like 1.5 hours to cross a solar system would make it long enough to seem a challenge, but small enough to be doable. What really matters is whether or not the player will get bored in between.
Why are they called urinal cakes if you're not supposed to eat them?

Some time ago, I suggested a FTL like Babylon 5. Jump gates, and jump generators (for big ships) that allow to enter to the hyper space. The hyper space, is a annoying place with a lot of EM noise that make long range sensors useless, but is "compressed" respect normal space. Travelling 1 meter in hyperspace is like travelling (for example) 100 meters in normal space.
The good points of the idea are :
- Choosing an adequate compression factor, we can make FTL enough slow to have appreciable travel times.
- Hyperspace is a place were player can ambush, attack or hide from other players in a different conditions that should have in normal space (long range sensors off, shields could be less effective, etc...)
- Jump gates acts a hubs for players, but allowing ship jump generators that required mid or big ships to be used, allow to some players, to avoid these hubs, or use these big ships as a flying mobile base for others.
- Hyperspace is a good site to find ships wrecks and relics.

For into the fire they modeled hyperspace compression ratio based on the gravity wells. Low earth orbit would have a near 1:1 rato while interstellar space would have much larger ratios.
