Some time ago, I suggested a FTL like Babylon 5. Jump gates, and jump generators (for big ships) that allow to enter to the hyper space. The hyper space, is a annoying place with a lot of EM noise that make long range sensors useless, but is "compressed" respect normal space. Travelling 1 meter in hyperspace is like travelling (for example) 100 meters in normal space.
The good points of the idea are :
- Choosing an adequate compression factor, we can make FTL enough slow to have appreciable travel times.
- Hyperspace is a place were player can ambush, attack or hide from other players in a different conditions that should have in normal space (long range sensors off, shields could be less effective, etc...)
- Jump gates acts a hubs for players, but allowing ship jump generators that required mid or big ships to be used, allow to some players, to avoid these hubs, or use these big ships as a flying mobile base for others.
- Hyperspace is a good site to find ships wrecks and relics.
